Life is moving fast for the pop/R&B artist Dreamer Isioma. The Chicago-bred, Nigerian-American artist became a viral sensation after posting the single “Sensitive” in early 2021 and attracted some renowned fans, Lizzo and SZA among them. Isioma has since released two albums of otherworldly slow jams and futuristic funk, which will be performed at Sonia on Friday.“I’m glad and grateful if people think I’m cool,” Isioma (who is nobinary and uses they/they pronouns) said this week. “It affected me a lot — All of a sudden I have these eyes on me, so I’d better do something about it. I’m still very much who I was when I started, I just know more and am a little wiser.”To make the new album “Princess Forever,” Isioma investigated a lot of philosophy and music history. “With each project I do, I like to reinvent myself and show a different side...

Lowry: The Bud Light meltdown is good for America

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:40:57 GMT

We should all be grateful to Anheuser-Busch.Some corporation had to show how “woke” marketing could cost an iconic American brand dearly in terms of its image, its sales and its market capitalization.Through its special beer can produced for transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, Anheuser-Busch, in effect, volunteered for duty. The CEO of General Motors didn’t really say in the 1950s that what’s good for GM is good for the country.Still, to paraphrase the famous misquote of auto executive Charles Wilson, what’s terrible for Bud Light sales is now good for America. With every viral anti-Bud Light video and 12-pack moldering on a store shelf or in a warehouse, the message is being sent to other corporations that they may come to regret their gratuitous forays into the culture war. Now, Target has directly learned the same lesson with its Pride apparel, and has removed some clothes and made associated displays less prominent. Coupled with the ongoing content...

Tee Thursday: Pembroke’s road back

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 10:40:57 GMT

A revelation, perhaps: Some of my friends are not perfect. Like me (and most humans when they’re honest about it), they show flaws; moments of glory and flashes of not so great. I think it makes them all the more interesting.I may feel the same way about golf courses. Of course playing an absolutely pristine course with every advantage one could want is more than embraceable – like I said, I’m human. But there’s beauty, too, in a course that’s trying. In a course that has great bones, a decent look overall and tries to be their best.In that spirit, consider a round at Pembroke Country Club (https://www.pembrokegolf.com). I headed there for 18 recently, knowing they’d faced hard times in the semi-recent past (foreclosed and run-down circa 2008; working its way back since). What I found was the course layout set into place by designer Philip A. Wogan back in 1973 and recognized then as one of the best course layouts around still provides the base and challenge that makes a golf day gre...
