The uncertain status of injured redshirt freshman RJ Smith has trimmed the backcourt depth of the Colorado men’s basketball team.A possible reinforcement might be on the way from an unexpected source.Injured guard Javon Ruffin recently returned to practice in a non-contact capacity, and if his rapid recovery from offseason knee surgery continues unabated, he could be in the mix down the stretch for the Buffaloes.“He can do all the non-contact stuff right now,” CU head coach Tad Boyle said. “He can run. He can do 5-on-0. He can do shooting. And he looks good. I hope we can get him back this year. We’ll see. I’m cautiously optimistic about it. But I have no time frame. It’s not going to be anything imminent.”Ruffin is a versatile 6-foot-5 guard with the potential to be one of the top 3-point shooters on a team off to a hot start from the arc. But Ruffin’s CU career has been marked by persistent trouble with his right knee.Injured at the end of his high school career, Ruffin endured su...
