Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:44:39 GMT

Halfway through the process of determining who still qualifies for Medicaid coverage in Colorado, recipients are getting kicked off at about the same rate they were before the pandemic.During the COVID-19 public health emergency, states received extra federal money if they kept almost everyone already in Medicaid on their rolls. Under normal circumstances, the state would run annual checks to determine whether recipients still qualified based on their income, disabilities, pregnancy status, or other factors. The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing sent out the first renewal notices in March and began reassessing members’ eligibility in May. 49ers report card: Cardinals dub Shanahan an ‘offensive mad scientist’

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:44:39 GMT

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Here is how the 49ers (11-3) graded in Sunday’s 45-29, NFC West-clinching victory over the host Arizona Cardinals (3-11):PASS OFFENSE: ABrock Purdy strengthened his MVP candidacy by throwing four touchdown passes, avoiding a turnover and shaking off a second-quarter shoulder stinger from a helmet-to-helmet hit that leveled him. Christian McCaffrey caught two of those scoring passes, including a 5-yarder on the same drive that Purdy got hurt and later a 41-yarder that had him backpedaling  and falling down before scoring. McCaffrey finished with a team-high 72 yards (five catches). George Kittle had only two catches, but both were third-down conversions, including a one-handed, 19-yard effort to the 6-yard line, on Purdy’s second pass after his injury scare. Deebo Samuel’s own 19-yard catch capped the season-high scoring barrage. Here’s a surprising stat: Purdy did not get sacked in a game where his health and season looked in question from that second-quarter smash...

Records raise new questions about Alameda County’s response to toddler fentanyl death

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:44:39 GMT

Just two days after 23-month-old Kristofer Ferreyra died of a suspected fentanyl overdose, an Alameda County social worker recommended keeping his three young siblings in the care of his mother, despite police having just found tin foil, baggies and other drug paraphernalia in their house. In fact, for reasons that remain unclear, Kristofer’s death wasn’t even noted in a social worker’s initial assessment of the home, according to new records obtained by this news organization. Not until three weeks later, on Nov. 7 — when news of the toddler’s fatal overdose became public and Fremont police announced the arrest of his mother on suspicion of murder — did social workers file a new assessment, acknowledging the toddler’s death and recommending the other children in the home be placed in the county’s care. It’s just one of the troubling inconsistencies revealed in social workers’ records regarding Kristofer that raise questions about the county’s handling of child welfare cases — pa...

Total eclipse of the loss? How San Jose State’s season turned around after Spartans saw Ring of Fire in Albuquerque sky

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 09:44:39 GMT

Just over two months ago, San Jose State players and coaches were standing in the back parking lot of the Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown Hotel in New Mexico looking up at the sky.Coach Brent Brennan was looking for something, anything to pump life into his Spartan team, who was 1-5 at the time with a crucial game against New Mexico later that day. After hearing that the Ring of Fire — a solar eclipse that forms a bright ring around the moon’s silhouette — would be visible from their hotel, he instructed his staff to find solar viewers for the team to watch the natural phenomenon.Since that warm Albuquerque morning in October, SJSU has rattled off six straight wins and is heading to its third bowl game in four years when it plays Coastal Carolina in the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 23.Was it just a coincidence that the Spartans are playing their best football after seeing the Ring of Fire? Perhaps. But Brennan believes something more spiritual was at play which led to SJSU’s strong finish to the r...
