Kurtenbach: The Warriors, Kings waited 38 years to meet in the playoffs. It was worth the wait.

SAN FRANCISCO — Over the past seven postseasons, the Warriors have been challenged by a steady run of worthy Western Conference foes. The Oklahoma City Thunder, Memphis Grizzlies, San Antonio Spurs, and various versions of the Houston Rockets all swung at Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and the Dubs.Golden State has managed to defeat them all.But the Warriors might have met their match in the Sacramento Kings. It took nearly 40 years for the Kings and Warriors to face off in the playoffs, but it’s proving worth the wait. Now, the Dubs used steady improvement and home-court advantage to win the last two games and tie this once best-of-seven series at 2-2, turning it into a best-of-three.But the Kings were one shot away from ending the Warriors’ dynastic run on Sunday. The Warriors’ past and future hung in the balance as Harrison Barnes’ 3-point shot with 1.5 seconds remaining traveled through the air.Perhaps 18,000-plus in Chase Center gasping in unis...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 15:12:58 GMT

Warriors survive Curry calling timeout they didn’t have

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 15:12:58 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Stephen Curry thought he had a perfect plan, until it backfired. The reigning NBA Finals MVP called a timeout the defending champions didn’t have — and nearly cost Golden State a crucial playoff game. The Warriors held on to beat the Kings anyway. “I ain’t gonna lie, I thought it was the smartest play in the world,” Curry said after a 126-125 victory that evened the best-of-seven first-round series with Sacramento at 2-all. “When I grabbed the ball and turned around and saw the trap, realized there was no real outlets instead of turning it over, it’s kind of the heady play but it turned out not to be. I looked over at the bench and everyone was shaking their head, so it was an unfortunate situation in that respect.”Coach Steve Kerr took responsibility for the ill-advised timeout.“We took the challenge and when the challenge was unsuccessful, as we were exiting the huddle, it’s on me,” Kerr said. “I’ve got to remind the guys, we’re out of timeout...

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Lilia Vu birdied the first playoff hole to win her first major at the Chevron Championship after fellow American Angel Yin hit her approach shot into the water on Sunday.Yin’s second shot came up short and left and splashed into the pond guarding the par-5 18th hole, and Vu hit her approach just over the green. Vu went with putter from off the green and came up well short, but she converted from about 10 feet for the victory. The 25-year-old Californian won for the second time on the LPGA Tour and took a celebratory leap into the pond, a tradition borrowed from this tournament’s former venue at Mission Hills in the California desert.Vu birdied her last two holes for a 4-under 68 and a four-day total of 10-under 278 at Carlton Woods, then waited as other contenders — including Yin — faltered. But Yin, after bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes, birdied the 18th to force the playoff.Vu played at UCLA but considered quitting the game after a rough sta...

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 15:12:58 GMT

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Kyle Busch used miscommunication with his Richard Childress Racing crew to win at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday in double overtime and under caution. It was the second win of the season for Busch in his new No. 8 Chevrolet and second career victory at Talladega — 15 years apart. It was the 13th win for RCR at Talladega, and team owner Richard Childress entered the post-race news conference carrying an open bottle of champagne from his vineyard. But as the race headed toward additional laps, Busch’s crew chief made a late call for Busch to come in for some gas. The message was received too late and Busch had to save fuel just to ensure he could complete another two-lap sprint.Bubba Wallace surged past him into the lead from the outside line but was turned by Ryan Blaney to trigger a multi-car crash that automatically ended the race. “Sometimes...
